I went to Confession every Saturday, four o’clock sharp. Anyone unprepared asked for remarks. Contrary to belief, I took years polishing an eloquent routine, all the way down to the right DSW shoes. Each week, I trimmed more and more time off each session to show improvement in my self reflection as Father Bob once said I lacked. After I requested the holiest advice, my priest sent me to a website called Christway Counseling for qualities I must inherit. Availability vs. self-centeredness: the first item on the list to fix. Periodically, but only occasionally, I turned down pleas from classmates to finish their essay. Presumably, I decided the next time she begged for my aid, I proved my devotion to God: I wrote the whole essay. I clenched onto the knot I formed in the process of twirling the choppy frames of my face. My escape plan seized and I looked towards the lion’s den; the smoke surrounded me, oppressed my body into a glass ball about to crack. Notwithstanding my desire to suddenly catch a contentious and lethal disease, I trudged into judgment day under the heated magnifying glass. My initial breath selfishly absorbed any existing oxygen. Gasping for air, all circulation ran out of my toes; each step felt heavier and heavier until my feet locked with the carpet and soon my face reached the edge of the chair before I did; nevertheless, I army crawled through the blind spot between the priest and me, wiping the mud off my face. Obeying the order, I sprang onto the chair like it was my duty to fill it; as soon as I made full contact, my sinful actions steamed the vacant atmosphere. In education the main approach of an assessment is to determine what students have learned in a course or program. By determining what and how students learn teachers can oversee student progress, clarify student’s strengths and weaknesses, and keep a journal of these results to better help students. Second grade students are assessed to simply find the areas of struggles in their learning. In creating the assessment chart I was able to identify the common core standards and compare what level the student should be on and what level that actual student is on in their learning abilities. The standards help with keeping the teacher and the student on a focused path. Being able to chart the results from the assessment gave me the idea of creating a journal for students; this will help with learning progress and minor set backs in the individual student. Setting goals in learning is most important for each student and the teacher, the journal will help both teacher and students stay on top of these goals. I learned that it is very helpful, and important for teachers to conduct review sessions, these sessions will help struggling students build strength in their weak areas of learning. In conclusion, learning assessments are necessary for both student and teacher, and good idea must first start with a plan and I believe this is what a learning assessment will accomplish. Students need help in being guided in the right direction towards being successful in their learning career, teachers need plans to help be able to guide students in positive learning directions, I believe that the solution to both of these directional paths are conducting assessments and gathering the results of these assessments. Understanding and comprehending taught lessons are key elements to students, and the more a teacher knows about how their students learn the better prepared they can be to teach their students. So I decided I was sick of the high-school-scale rat race, of the comparing game, of pride and external validation. But, you want to know something? John and I dream different dreams. I am not walking in his shadow; Im going in an entirely different direction. On Saturdays when hes coaching soccer, Im helping middle-schoolers design yearbooks. On Thursday nights when hes studying for a calculus test, Im serving at my youth group. When hes practicing the sax, Im writing for my blog. His joy and success is no greater than mine, regardless of whether or not its accompanied by another blue ribbon. The world, I realized, is full of Johns. John is the colleague who gets the raise, the researcher who gets the grant, the entrepreneur who gets past bankruptcy. He (or she) is the lead role in the play and the writer with an actual book deal. But thats how its supposed to work, isnt it? Retreating to Walden Pond isnt likely to change the world.
